He survived. He triumphed. He helped turn disaster into what will perhaps always be remembered as NASA’s finest hour.

People remember his name and adventures more than many of his forgotten comrades who actually made it the moon.

So why did he confess to me over our third pitcher of beer that part of him wishes he’d went to the moon, even knowing he’d never be able to make it back? And the older he gets, the closer he gets to death, the more that part of him grows? He said he didn’t know why, but it seems to get bigger everyday.

I told him I wasn’t sure,

although I suppose that everyone dies- but not everyone goes to the moon.
