bigger = more important
Many years ago, my Ex had this book of art-porn. It was all photos this girl had taken of herself naked and having sex. The same sort of imagery that is made by cam-girls, et al of the internet, but with gravity added from being narrated by an art critic.
Most was forgettable, but one image/critique has stuck with me. It was a self-portrait- the girl, standing, held her camera between her legs, facing up, and took a photo. The art critic explained the significance of the composition: “She is saying that, to the audience, to us, she is a pussy first, breasts second, and finally, a person- her face.”
I thought at the absent critic: “That’s bullshit, it’s true that bigger = more important, but I don’t think her intent was there. You’re just interpreting tea leaves. If you’re going to take a picture of your own junk without help or a tripod that is simply the way to do it. You shift the angle down if you want it to be anonymous. What your saying is like claiming that Myspace kids are trying to say that they are a forearm first, a Hairstyle second, and finally, a person- their face.”
Which is kinda appropriate, actually.
Anyway, the idea of “Bigger Equals More Important” stuck with me.
Does ethnicity loom over the rest of identity for you?
