In the course of researching this work, I discovered that machines like the one I’m describing already exist.

They are known as “Reverse Vending Machines” and I think that they are an absolutely outstanding idea!

Special thanks to Miss Heather of New York Shitty for inspiring this piece; she wrote to me: “You should hit some of the pay phones in my hood. They’re usually employed as trash receptacles for empty fifths of vodka and/or brandy. Among other things.”

Thanks for getting me thinking about how people really use these payphones, and sorry that this didn’t make it’s way out to Greenpoint!

Thanks for the kind props! I have some ideas about the public urination facilities. Would love to share them with you. Shoot me an email.

How have you never heard of a recycling machine? Every supermarket under the sun has them.

Not in the frozen wastes of Canada!

Michigan does this, it works quite well. The lines to get deposits back are usually quite long and if rich people are too lazy to do it, homeless people tend to become trash-picker-uppers. Its a neat idea for sure.

I saw something similar that was actually an arcade game. Instead of getting coins back, you got to play a super awesome game. Consequently, teens everywhere picked up trash to try and beat the high score. Productive young people are powered by video games.
