Coming Soon…

This a collabo with Jason Eppink, though we had some great company along for the install- The Illustrious Jordan Seiler, Steve Lambert, and Packard Jennings!

Basically, after NYSAT, NPA added these signs (the last flick is of an untouched sign) to their ads in an attempt to find a loophole for their illegal ads. It goes a little something like this: If you own a building in NYC, say a restaurant, you can legally advertise your fantastic foodstuffs on the side of your building. That is a “First Party” sign. However, if you want to sell that space to someone else, say, Sony or Disney or whatever other “Third Party”- that’s not copacetic- In fact, it’s Illegal. So by offering some of the ads (Thats right, you can actually go into some of these places [ not all , many, unsurprisingly, will have no idea about any of this. The "Coming Soon" is meant to cover NPAs ass for that] and get these ads. Finally, something tasteful for over the couch, right?) and a chance to win some of the products advertised on the side of the building INSIDE the actual building, they are trying to magically turn third to first. Voila!

Jordan wrote about it on his site, he sums things up nicely, I do believe I’ll quote him:

Yesterday I went out with PosterChild, Jason Eppink, Steve Lambert, and Packard Jennings for lunch. Our talk inevitably surrounded upcoming personal projects, collaborative street actions and the age of the urinals at the Old Town Bar on 18th street. Posterchild was leaving for Toronto that evening and had one last project to put up before he left. Targeting NPA City Outdoor’s pathetic attempt to convert their third party illegal advertisements into legitimate first party signs, he remade the typical sign that now adorns all NPA illegal signage in the city. This piece was made at the corner of 19th street and 10th avenue in the same location Walker Tieser was arrested during the NYSAT project.

I can see this working for movie and band posters, but I don’t think I’d want to take home a poster for cleaning supplies. Still, it’s sketchy and lowbrow not to let the owner of the building know that they’re going to be offering this. (?)

It is my expectation that they tell the owner, or at least make it a clause in the contract somewhere. But the owner of the building and the tenant are not necessarily the same thing. You may be Joe’s Auto Repair, renting space from Bob the landlord, who also rents ad space to NPA on the side of the building you’re in. The ads have nothing to do with you (Joe), and when someone comes in asking for fabulous prizes, you have no clue what they are going on about.
