Guerrilla Gardening: Hops – Nugget
More Hops. A little Nugget sprout.
I’m trying to up my odds of seeing some hops survive and flourish through greater numbers.
I’ll keep sending them out just as quickly as I can nurture them.
Just call me Johnny Hoppleseed!

True, but apparently only to a couple of breeds (Of all the few known cases, Greyhounds were primarily the victims.) For those that don’t know, Hops can cause hyperthermia in dogs- a condition that raises the animals body temperature wildly, and can be very fatal.
Most importantly– Hops cones are only tempting to dogs AFTER the hops have been brewed with. Then they are mixed in with the spent grain and covered in the sweet, syrupy wort- the sugary stuff that the yeast will turn into beer. The sweet wort and the spent grain are the dogs true target. Before then, hops are extremely bitter and unpalatable to dogs- and humans. So yes, it is a real concern, but more for the homebrewer than the guerrilla gardener- don’t just dump your spent grain and hops in your backyard if dogs (especially greyhounds) are going to be hanging about.
Public safety is always my first concern before I install anything, whether it’s an artwork or a plant, and I always try to think about any and all possible problems before I give a project the go-ahead. I considered this issue, but since the risk posed to dogs by hops on the bine is minimal, I went ahead.
