Kewpie doll

Kewpie dolls were the first real instance of consumer mania – the first time that a specific brand of doll was collected. This makes Kewpie dolls the spiritual father of Barbie dolls, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo, and tons others.

Kewpie dolls were also the first instance of merchandise based on a comic character, coming as they did from illustrations done by Rose O’Neill in the Ladies’ Home Journal. Kewpie dolls made her rich!
