POSTERCHILD: ALL DOLLED UP

People have been asking me;

“Where are you man? What have you been up to? Have you been arrested? Where are the updates? Is your RSS feed broken?”

To answer snappily:

In my sweatshop.

Sewing in my underpants.

Not recently.

Coming!

Nope!

I’ve been preparing for a studio show! My first solo show! I hope you can come.

It’s at *Hotshot. Here is the facebook event.

From the press release:

‘ALL DOLLED UP’

BY POSTERCHILD

TORONTO’S GENTLEMAN VANDAL & NOTORIOUS STREET ARTIST

OPENING PARTY – THURSDAY JULY 10

Featuring installations, guest DJ & video astronaut projections

SHOW RUNS JULY 10 – 23, 2008

(Toronto) *Hotshot, presents Posterchild’s first solo exhibit ‘All Dolled Up,’ featuring his most beloved secret identity the Dead (or Post) Astronaut. Known as a Gentleman Vandal and one of Toronto’s most notorious and original street artists, Posterchild has developed a few secret identities and a handful of pseudonyms, but none so persistent as the Post-Astronaut.

In addition to creating a staggering number of stencils, posters, & clandestine installations over the last five years, Posterchild has developed an enthusiasm for a mystery astronaut, creating a plethora of street-based images of dead space men and women. After some time exploring and discovering this creature, Posterchild decided to take the additional step of getting into the skin of the identity. Thus, in the closing days of 2006, the artist sewed together a dead astronaut suit of his own devising. A suit designed not for the intense pressures of exploring outer space, but rather the intense pressures of exploring public space. Since that time, Posterchild has donned his suit, skull makeup with astro-hat and helmet, and has pushed the limits of space exploration and embellishment – as well as creating several videos documenting his space walks in the process.

After returning from a triumphant mission with fellow spaceman Jason Eppink in New York, Posterchild is now ready to bring his street based art ‘indoors.’ In his latest installation ‘All Dolled Up,’ Posterchild has adapted and shrunken his suit design and has handmade a legion of plush avatars. These new soft sculptures explore the possibilities of textures and patterns in conveying and creating character and identity.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Mother for her vital help sewing the suit and for helping me learn to sew. Thanks also to my Ex-Girlfriend for her essential gift of an old sewing machine and for her heroic endurance of long, late hours and frozen toes while filming me. Thank you both for your love and support- this show would not have taken place without it.
