Using postal labels is something of a tradition in Graffiti and Street Art.
Postal stickers are quick to apply, easy to get ahold of, and often free.
Earlier this year I was in Korea, where I discovered that Korean Postal Stickers were large and interesting. I started putting some up and thought about how there wasn't anyone else doing the same in Korea. Korea has a small (but growing) street art scene.
I decided that it would be cool to send Korean Postal Stickers to street artists all over the world. They would do their thing on them, send some back, and then I would put the results up on the streets of Korea.
I thought that putting all those international artists up together would be like creating an "Instant Scene". It would bring, at least for a little while, sticker culture to Korea.
I got on some forums, sent some emails, and posted about it on my Fotolog. I asked many artists to join the project.
I also held a contest to name the project.
Stoop suggested the winning name: "SticKorea"
Another suggestion was "Sticky Fingers".
Once the deadline passed for finished stickers, I put the entries up together in a Seoul subway station.
You can view them here> STICKOREA.
It was a good, high traffic location, but the stickers only lasted a day.
I returned to Canada, and in under a month's time, Olmonster asked me: "so when's stickanada happening post?"
I thought it was a good idea.
You can see the results here. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see a composite photograph and a video of the installation.
This time I choose a location that doesn't get as much foot traffic as a subway station, but should last a lot longer. To help preserve the stickers, I sprayed them with Lacquer, which should help seal them off from the elements, shield them from mold growth, and discourage amateur art collectors. This surface has never been buffed to my knowledge.
The Spray Lacquer is why the stickers look glossy and translucent in the video.
