So I’ve become addicted to listening to CBC radio three while at work.
Not so much for the shows. Amanda Putz in the morning is alright, but then it’s The Craig Norris “Hour”, which actually lasts, like, 5. And I find him grating. So after Amanda I browse their impressive selection of new Canadian music.
I’ve discovered some good stuff that way, as well as come across alot of old favorites like Buck 65 and Donovan Woods.
Someone I hadn’t heard- Classified. Check out The Maritimes and Hard to Be Hip Hop feat. Maestro.

Epic WIN.

This glass didn’t work either. At all.
And this type of vinyl was especially sensitive to the chemicals.
It died right away.
Everything sucked.
Interestingly, the cheapie shelf coating vinyl- the sort that you can find at any dollar store- worked the best. It was way tougher and its adhesive held up to the cold and the chems better than any others.
I suppose that this experiment wasn’t a total loss, as I learned that the chems penetrate right through the paints and inks- even if they don’t loosen them. So if there is a more easily loosened ink underneath, it’ll come off and bring the top layer with it.
Looks cool eh?
Could be a cool technique.
Certainly a neat way to bring your covered tags back to the surface.

Glass was good on the whole, but not every type of glass I tried buffed up easily.

This one didn’t. It was textured.

Too bad. I was excited for this one.

See, The texture held the paint, and that meant alot more scrubbing, and you only have so long to scrub before the toxic slurry that removes the graff also eats the vinyl. And then you’re pooched.

This is what happened here.

I really like how this one turned out.

God. I love Simon and Garfunkel. All’yall that got something to say about that can get bent.

This metal, whatever it is, was the best thing I tried to buff.

EVERYTHING melted off it.

I wish it wasn’t the second last surface I tried. I would have liked to have done more like it.

This door gave me the same problems.

So instead I tried just smearing it around..

Ah. This one didn’t work.
It was an experiment, after all.
A very interesting experiment! like reverse engineering tagging.
I learned a few things from it;
First- Buffing is fucking hard. It takes a lot of time and It’s a lot of elbow grease.
Second- If you really want your shit to last, forget the blacks, whites, and metallics (Favorites for their coverage and contrast) and go with the colours. For some reason colours are a lot harder to loosen up.
Third- Don’t go on anything smooth or sealed- like glass, tile, or some kinds of metals. The kind of raw steel above is a good call- it seems to be porous and have a bit of a tooth… Anycase, it is impossible to get shit off it.

Some surprises,
Classic Krink Silver, for all the hype, comes off damn easy.
Unsurprisingly, more conventional inks, like sharpie stuff, practically melts away…
So does oil stick.

Most graffiti is additive. Layer after layer.

So I was gonna call this subtractive graffiti. I thought I had never really seen any subtractive graff before. Maybe scratchiti?

But then I remembered Mooses brilliant reverse graffiti.

So then I thought maybe I should call this “Reverse Graffiti” too.

But now I think I’ll stick with “Subtractive Graffiti”, because Moose works almost exclusively with the removal of dirt and grime. To me that what Reverse Graffiti means- Cleaning up dirt. This is different, this is working with graff itself. Is that different enough to warrant a different name?

Maybe not,

Not that it really matters.

Maybe I’ll run with Buffingraff.

Several weeks ago I was in a Hardware store with a mouthfull of super-sweet dollar store gum, looking for plaster of paris for this project.

I came across a product for removing graffiti. I knew these sort of products existed, but I had never seen them in person before…

Of course I bought it.
