In the talk I posted yesterday, I speak at the end about my recent marriage proposal to my fabulous Girlfriend Fiancée! That’s right, she said yes!!!

She thought she was just helping me out with another street art project; I kept this covered until after it was installed and after the unveiling I was expecting some kind of reaction- but it took a little while to convince her that this was a proposal for real, and not just some art project!

Ha! But she said “Yes”, so it’s all gravy!

Last one in the series! I’m not going to make you guess -it’s so easy anyway- I’m just going to tell you: this is the Brooklyn Bridge.

This is almost a Failure Friday, as the spot is far too bright to really allow the sunset effect to come through- but I’m not calling it a complete failure as the ads are still covered. Success! I knew that this spot would be problematic, but I really wanted to use it- so nice- right beside the Flatiron building.

How about this new one? My sweetie and I took this photo while enjoying the brisk air and glorious sunset- a sombering moment of reflection came when I realized that I never saw the city with the towers. I tried to put them back on the skyline, but I wasn’t sure where to place them. I realized that New Yorkers seeing this same skyline with me must only see what is missing- always. I tried to picture coming back from Toronto Island, and seeing Toronto without a CN Tower.

…where were we when I took this photo?

Still no guesses? Here’s another, larger view taken from where we were enjoying our snacks.

BIG HINT: We are between a place where train cars on specialized ferries (unpowered barges equipped with train tracks, moved by tugs, and called “car floats”) were once unloaded, and a place where “Brad’s Drink” was once bottled.

Eeeeeasyyyy- someone has GOT to get this now!

See how the three triangles form a (somewhat wonky) Postronimo when viewed from the side? Would you believe that was a happy accident?

This universe must love me.

Apparently, earlier in the month, the last incandescent bulb was removed from Grand Central Terminal. From TransitTransit News Magazine:

OCTOBER 2009

LAST BULB
“The last incandescent light bulb was exchanged for newer florescent bulbs in Grand Central Terminal. These new energy efficient bulbs will brighten up the terminal, saving the MTA millions over the next few years. We sent our reporter Samantha Ronda to witness the historic change of light.”

The idea with this piece is to take all that energy being thrown away -24/7- on aggressive advertising; and cut back on it. Reduce it. Quiet all that info down to just some warm colours dimly flickering inside the dead shell of a rapidly obsolete lightsource.

It’s interesting to me: the lightbulb, once a symbol of bright ideas, is becoming more of a symbol of the wasteful ways we must grow beyond. Visible incandescent lightbulbs in a workplace, or even a private home, can be an embarrassing faux-pas for the proprietor.

Still, lets forget about the incandescent bulbs for a minute, at least they serve a function; removing those 80+ video billboards will save tons of energy, “saving the MTA millions over the next few years”.

And that’s just the video billboards. Think about all the resources and energy spent constantly printing vinyl and paper ads for MTA subways, buses, shelters and stations.

Maybe if I can’t get you on board for political, social, aesthetic, legal or psychological reasons, I can convince you for environmental reasons. So many good reasons to rethink advertising.
