These lil’ trucks are magnetic advertisements I found stuck (parked?) around NY. I’ve collected a few and returned them with a new paint job.

Whenever it’s a Tag Tuesday I like to write a little something extra; for all of y’all who care not for tags. I’m not sure what to write today… I think I’ll write some thoughts about being BROKE and WAY TOO BUSY and NEEDING SOMETHING before getting started on building something! I will do this in a SHORT LIST FORM.

Ahem,

	As an artist, there are things in this world that will prevent you from achieving what it is you ideally want to achieve. These are real obstacles, and they can usually (In my experience) be described as a deficiency in some regard.
	The deficiencies that you feel the most will depend on the quirks and circumstances of your birth and life till now juxtaposed with whatever your goals happen to be.
	But whatever resource it is that you feel you are poor in, whether it is time, money, information, network, location, materials, space, transportation, training, assistance, access, skill, strength, whatever, anything- waiting for that resource or resources to come into abundance is a great way to waste time and become embittered. It can also become a crutch and an excuse.
	Futhermore, want is not the desolate plain you imagine it to be, impossible to produce in, void of productivity. In fact, Want is just the opposite. Want forces creative solutions. Want is not a state to be abandoned, it is a fertile ground to be developed.
	And finally, the aesthetics of want will eventually become coveted by those who have all the resources that you wish you had. Think about that. And get started.

For my last trick, I’ll change a support ribbon into my Dead Astronaut, using the negative space of the ribbon to create a skull shape.

Taaa-da!

Someone ought too.
We all seem to like a bit of live theather. Maybe some comedy, eh?

It seems hard to establish facts these days, but I’ve heard it said that the massive American military buildup now takes over a million dollars a minute to support.

Support our Troops.

Imagine a few hours -a days worth- of American military support funnelled into American social programs? Education? Space travel? Culture?

What could be achieved?

I’m not American, but the whole world has a vested interest in where America lays her priorities.

This one is dedicated to my homies in the performing arts, yo.

I like this one alot. I think it reflects my feelings on the ribbons well.

I cut two ribbons apart and put them back together to form an infinite möbius strip of support.

I support supporting things!

Support support support support.

la-la-la-la-la!

Möbius strips also have only one side. Eh? eh? Like, like- there is only one side to the argument? With us or against us? Eh? eh?

This week, all the stencils will atop of “Support Ribbons”.

Support ribbons, with their direct, declarative language are actually quite politically vague and perhaps that’s why they’ve been so successful.

“Support our Troops”? What does that mean, really? It’s damn fuzzy. Perhaps some would argue that you’re meant to be lead sideways to “Support our War”, or “Support our Government and all of its bad decisions” through “Support our Troops”, but I would argue that the makers of magnets have no political agenda except making money, and the real success of this ribbon phenomenon is how essentially meaningless and void the “Support” message is.

Because it’s hollow, you can interpret it however you choose-


Support our Troops? Hell yes, the war must go on; give them the tools to finish the job!


or


Support our Troops? Damn right, bring them home!

And I think that’s why I want to parody these ribbons. They are, in thier many incarnations, more or less meaningless. Seeing that makes me a little angry. Something about the ribbons makes me a little angry, anyway, and I think that’s what it is.

I dunno.

Maybe it’s all the hodgepodge of symbols going on now. That’s not helping anything. How is one to read a “God Bless America” magnet with a camouflage background? I’m not an expert on symbolism, but it seems pretty obvious to me one should read it as “God Bless America and its Wars”

How about a “Support our Troops” ribbon with an American flag background?

What about when they throw a heart, or better yet, a cross into the negative space? Doesn’t that seem to be saying “God Bless America’s holy wars?”, or should I read it “Support Christianity, America, and our Christian troops.”?

Maybe I’m overreacting, but icons and symbols are very important. We think in symbols, to a large degree. Blagh. What do I know? Anyway, what better way to vent this than a week full of parody magnets?
